Do you have small children? Are you taking a vacation this summer? Or going to a birthday party? Or possibly just walking into a your favorite retail store? You may come face-to-face with a mascot, and it may or may not be the highlight of your little ones’ day. For some tips and insights on how to handle various situations with costumed characters, pick up a copy of the April/May issue of Little Ones Magazine and read the piece on “Managing Mascot Mayhem.” If you’re not in the Charlotte area, you can click here.
I had fun writing this piece – partially because I have some experience in the mascot arena and was personally interested in better understanding the dynamic with small children. It was also a great experience with this editor. She was specific but flexible, accessible but not overly worried (and she could have been, it was our first time working together), and supportive when I indicated that two of my original contacts had fallen through.
I’ve still got a lot to figure out in the freelance realm, but this was a positive experience overall and produced some valuable lessons.
So, from one mascot and freelance writer to the rest of the world, read this piece to help the children in your sphere to have a safe and positive experience with these (mostly) lovable creatures-in-disguise this summer.
