Saturday Snuggles: Rooster Can’t Cock-a-Doodle-Doo

When you head to the library or bookstore this weekend with the kiddos, keep an eye out for Rooster Can’t Cock-A-Doodle-Doo by Karen Rostoker-Gruber and illustrated by Paul Ratz de Tagyos.

Poor Rooster. He really is a responsible creature, but on this day he has a horrible sore throat. He can’t cock-a-doodle-doo! No one on the farm will wake up! So, he starts his rounds visiting each of the animal groups to wake them up and to seek their advice. That is how the hens, the cows, the sheep, and the pigs end up stacked on each other outside of Farmer Ted’s bedroom window. These farm animals are quite the problem-solvers and funny in the process. Once they wake up Farmer Ted they have to all help with the chores or some animals are not going to be helped before the sun goes down. Enter the genius of this section: illustrator Paul Ratz de Tagyos. All the animals milking the cows and shearing the sheep are my favorites, but the other chores they assist with are comical as well. Will everyone be finished by sunset? Will rooster have rested enough to sound the morning alarm tomorrow?

A fun read with entertaining pictures and good problem-solving examples.
